I want to change my hair color and i dont think i can afford a salon so i am going to try it myself?

I have been coloring my hair for the past 21 years on and off. here is my problem. My hair is naturally 2 shades away from black......... dark dark dark brown. i have a dark red in it right now with alot of roots and i am starting to grey ugh im 36. I use to have this awesome auburn color for years and years and want to go back to it but its a tad bit lighter then my hair color. so i was wondering should i lighten my hair and then do the auburn to have an awesome red again? my hair is long and thick. this is why its kinda expensive to color at a salon last time it cost 100. I was thinking about using 2 blonde kits and then use the auburn i use to use nice and easy 107 which they dont make anymore but light auburn. any suggestions would be helpful. I have a pic of my old hair color if you would like to see. thanks in advance.

Your hair is challenging to color by nature for all the reasons you mentioned in your question. Hearing what you are trying to achieve, I would not recommend doing this yourself.

Perhaps you could go to a beauty college and ask for a student who is almost about to graduate. This should cost no more than $40.

sounds like it would work my suggestion is deep condition you're hair for a week before you die it so the dye well absorb easier.
