I want to know what brand of hair color that you can purchase at the store is the best you have ever used (preferrably one that is les than $10 a box because I have to buy 2).

I talked to the most reasonably priced hair studio around town that focuses on hair coloring and they charge a base of $25 for all over color, plus $5 for every 2 inches your hair goes past your shoulder (mine goes 13 inches past my shoulder, so that is an about extra $35) which would mean it would cost me $60 just to get my hair colored. This is why I want to do it myself (also why I have to get 2 boxes of color.

I'm not the best at coloring hair since I'm not a stylist so I want to know which brand of color is the richest and boldest (preferrably for an auburn color; going from dark blonde to light auburn). Remember, under $10 a container if possible please!

Use Revlon High Dimension. It works well and only takes 10-15 minutes instead of 45-60 minutes. It is about $10 a box, but our Walgreens has it on sale all the time 2 for 1. Wal-Mart would be cheaper probably. Dark blonde to light auburn is no big deal. Even with long hair, you only need 1 box. For short hair, you only need 1/2 box.

They contain metalic dyes. It dries your hair out extremely bad and you never know what color your hair is going to turn out. It could be green! If you mess up your hair it cost so much more money to get it fixed.(starts at $100). Another option is to go to a beauty supply store (sally's) and talk to someone there. It actually leaves your hair smoother then it was before you dyed it. It's under $10, one bottle costs about $7. Since you are considering coloring it a auburn color I would really recommend this hair color. They make some nice shades of auburn.

I use Clairol Natural Instincts in Sedona Sunset. I have naturally dark brown hair and I wanted a dark auburn color. I only used one box and it came out perfectly. (My hair is about 4 inches past my shoulders.) The one box was $7.50 at Wal-Mart and $8.50 at CVS. (I got mine at Wal-Mart.) My only suggestion is that you leave the color on for 15 minutes instead of 10. That way you get a richer tone and more natural-looking highlights.

Go to a beauty supply and look at Joyco or Goldman brands of dye in 2 oz bottles. They are about $4.00 for a bottle for the dye. Then think about the peroxide. If you have gray or dark coarse hair, choose a 40 volume (strong) peroxide. If you have soft gentle "young" hair go with 10 volume (weakest) peroxide. There ate 20 and 30 volumes in between depending on the state of your hair. Of course, roots first for 10 minutes. Put a plastic shower cap over your head. That's the true secret -- the cap. Then mix it through the rest of your hair for 5 or 10 minutes under the cap. That's the best way to do your own hair. It's what the pros do and what the pros use.

You can do the same process with a stronger peroxide and a lighter color dye for highligts and streaks. Have confidence in yourself!
