Highlight colored hair at home?

I used a Garnier Nutrisse hair coloring kit about a month ago to color my hair a darkish/ash brown and cover my gray hairs. I want to do my own highlights (just a few around my face) at home too, is it safe to do this, do you think it will turn out ok? I don't want to turn my hair green or purple or anything! Also, my natural hair color is dark brunette.

if your hair is an ash tone right now avoid highlighting it or it will turn green. I would advise having someone else do it so they can tone it if it doesnt turn out quiet right.

Get it done professionally!

depends on what kind of highlights you want, if you want blonde you will probably have to use a bleach highlighting kit, but it is always best use both highlights and lowlights so it looks more natural then dramatic. but it all depends on the style your wanting to achieve.

also, if you dont plan on using the cap method, which someone will need to help you, and you only want to do the the top and the frame around your hairline, then i would use foil to hold each strand in place so it doesn't touch your brown hair.

NO...DON'T DO IT!!!! If your hair is at all dark, those at-home highlighting kits turn your hair orange-even ones that claim to eliminate brassy tones, or say that it will turn your hair "ash-blonde." I have tried almost all of them, and have been disappointed with every single one.

I used to highlight my own hair at home. I pulled it through the cap. I have dark brown hair and wanted the blond highlights. First, it gets tiring when you are trying to pull the cap down tight, pull hair through the holes, and hold a hand mirror to see the sides and back of your head, ALL at the same time. My arms would get tired, to say the least. Once I would get the hair pulled through, I would have to wait a certain amount of time, and if I didn't wait the exact amount of time, like just waiting a little less time, my hair would be orange. The bleach used in the highlighting kits has to stay on a good bit of time for the color to come out right. If the bleach is not left on long enough, then you get orange hair.

I finally got tired of this, and now I have it professionally done. It's so worth the extra money to pay a professional to do the job.

If you want them to be perfect than get them done professionaly but if you will settle with okay than do it yourself....remeber there is a chance you wont like how it comes out if you do it yourself but there is always professionaly!
