I am coloring my friends hair today and she has dyed blonde hair with about an inch and a half of a lightest brown root. We got a lightest brown hair color to go over it. any suggestionbs on how to apply the color without making her hair look crazy.

oh, good luck... with her having bleached hair, the color will "soak" into that first because it is more porous...
Her roots will probably end up being a different color...but hopefully it will work out...just make sure you can get into a salon if it looks terrible!!!
Personally, I would never recommend doing it yourself... Have seen way too many catastrophe's when I worked in a salon...
Good luck!!

putting brown dye over blonde is difficult. blonde color has a yellow base while brown has a blue base. sometimes when u put brown on yellow u get that kinda greeny color, so i asked a salon stylist and they said u need a neutralizer which will cancel it out. they said put a little something with a red base in too so that u don't turn out lookin like u jumped out of a mega chlorinated pool. hope u look darling

Rule of thumb is, when trying to color hair back to its natural color after a bleaching is to go two shades lighter than your natural hair color.
Why? Because bleached hair is porous, and it will grab the color, it will turn darker than the rest. Some hair if improperly done will grab the base color in the color you chose and may turn green, purple...red, dependent on the base color used in the dye.
My suggestion to you...if your going to do this regardless is to use a bowl/glove method,(plastic, no metal) use your fingers to apply to the ends of her hair, and work throughout the area quickly. Watch the hair color, you do not have to follow the directions for amount of time, once the hair color has grabbed, check it. If it has taken, then follow the rest of the directions, either by washing/rinse out, or a rinse/condition out process.
The worse case scenario is that her hair is a bit darker than she originally intended it to be, or it fades out quicker than normally, and it has somewhat of a different hue...or her hair is very damaged, and it pulls the base color.
If her hair pulls the base color, get it rinsed off quickly....(now it will look that way somewhat, because of the oxidation of the color) Some hair color may start out looking orange, then all of a sudden it turns purple when the air hits it...thats normal. Just watch her hair....
It'll be ok.....

To go over which part? Roots or the ends? If if the ends apply the hair color to the ends only, if it is the roots apply to the roots only.
